OVERVIEW: The Mk 54 LHT Mod 0 is a U.S. Navy lightweight torpedo introduced in 2004, designed primarily for anti-submarine warfare in both deep and littoral environments. It integrates legacy hardware with modern commercial digital signal processing for enhanced performance and reduced lifecycle cost.

DETAILS: “Mk 54” denotes the 54th model in the lightweight torpedo series; “LHT” stands for Lightweight Hybrid Torpedo, and “Mod 0” identifies the initial production version. It is 106.9 in (2.72 m) long, 12.75 in (324 mm) in diameter, weighs approximately 607 lb (276 kg), and carries a 100 lb (43.9 kg) PBXN‑103 high-explosive warhead. Propulsion is by liquid monopropellant Otto Fuel II driving a twin contra-rotating propeller for speeds over 40 kn and ranges exceeding 9 km. Guidance combines active/passive acoustic homing with advanced COTS-based digital processing – derived from Mk 46 and Mk 50 components – enabling effective operation in cluttered littoral conditions; IOC was declared in 2004.

TYPE: Lightweight ship/air‑launched active/passive acoustic homing torpedo

FUNCTION: Launched from Mk 32 tubes aboard ships, helicopters, aircraft, or VL‑ASROC, it uses initial gyrostabilization followed by acoustic homing. Its digital guidance and sonar system adaptively search and track submarine targets, reducing false positives in shallow water before detonating upon contact.

NOTE:
